Heel Spurs
A heel spur is a boney growth on the bottom of the heel bone. It is a common finding on Xrays of middle aged men and women. Heel spurs are often confused with a condition called plantar fasciitis. The confusion occurs because plantar fasciitis has been referred to as Heel spur syndrome in literature and by physicians.
Heel spurs occur in 15% of the population. In people over 50 the incidence is over 50%. Even though there is an increased incidence of a heel spur being present with plantar fasciitis the spur is not the cause of the pain and does not have to be removed.
In a normal work up for heel pain if I diagnoses plantar fasciitis and a spur is present it will not alter my treatment plan.
